Here’s an easy recipe for cookies that your Shikoku will love. Cooling them in the oven makes them hard so they keep well and they help to clean teeth and massage the gums. Make them heart shaped for Valentines day or any other shape you prefer.
2 cups whole wheat flour
1 cup oats
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 cup unsweetened apple sauce
1/4 cup water
1 tbsp molasses or honey
Preheat oven to 350F degrees
In a large bowl stir together the flour, oats and cinnamon. In a small bowl combine the apple sauce, water, egg and molasses.
Add the apple sauce mixture to the flour mixture and stir until well blended. On a floured surface roll the dough out to about 1/2 inch thick and cut into shapes with a cookie cutter. ( I use hearts, circles or bone shapes… it’s up to you).
Transfer the cookies to a baking sheet that has been prepared with non-stick spray. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes until golden and firm. Turn the oven off and leave the cookies in the oven as it cools for several hours to allow cookies to harden.
Makes about 2 dozen cookies. Store in a tightly sealed container.
